It was founded in 1923 in Firozpur and has been a popular destination for readers of all ages since 1948 in Dehradun. In 2002, it became even more exciting with the addition of a coffee shop. In 2010, EBD acquired Book Cafe, further enhancing the customer experience. In 2020, we established the Learning Forward India Foundation to promote lifelong learning for everyone. Whether you're a regular customer or a first-time visitor, The Book Cafe provides an unmatched experience for book lovers.
The story of our family’s bookshop is truly inspiring! Narain Dass established the shop as a cherished legacy when he passed it on to his sons in 1965. Among them, Dev Dutt stood out as a visionary, moving to Dehradun to team up with his brother, Sukhdev, to manage the shop. In 1971, Snehlata joined her husband, and together they took the business to incredible new heights! When Dev Dutt faced health challenges in 1983, his son Sandeep, a recent college graduate, stepped up to support the family business. Tragically, Dev Dutt passed away in 1989, but Snehlata embraced leadership with grace. On a beautiful Mother’s Day morning, May 11, 2025, she shared a touching farewell moment with Sandeep, leaving him ready to navigate the future with confidence and love. What a remarkable legacy!
